Gorizia - Nova Gorica

Piled rubble, twenty feet high
The ruins of a civilization
A monument to war, and futility
Walking around it, thinking of all the years
The passage of time, hundreds of thousands of dead

Then walking through a long tunnel, while traffic goes by
Beneath a castle, and out into the light
Ahead: the border post
Questions and answers:
“Just visiting” “For one day”
“Back in a few hours” “I’m just a tourist” (no need to worry)

Then over the border, down a curving road
Another road tunnel; this time with no footpath
No way through
So over the hill I go
There’s a footpath there; in the mud
It looks like a forester’s trail
Through pine trees, up into the hills

Past an abandoned bus
Walking over pine needles; mounds all around me
And then a depression: I’m walking in a trench
A man-sized trench
A long, long trench
It’s from the First World War
As I walk through it, I think of the men who guarded this post
Back in the days when artillery shells blew down all the trees
And left the place a wasteland, on the Isonzo front

Then down the hill, to the Socialist town
Full of concrete brutalism, and statues of Tito
Memories of a time already passed
Memories
So many memories
All around
