At the Metelkova venue we are non-violent
Metelkova is safe if it is safe for children
We pick up our litter
In public, we do not break glass
At Metelkova, we are not pedantic
Things that I have not bought and which have not been given to me
are not mine
Keep a level head!

It was already late when we arrived; well after dark
A queue was forming outside the hall; people waiting for tickets
There to see the big rock stars from Russia
Me and my girlfriend, we had come a long way
Her from the States, me from New Zealand
And there we were at Metelkova

I liked the feel of the place; how it looked, how it was painted up
How the old police barracks had been less than subtly subverted
And turned into its polar opposite: a central city squat, inhabited by anarchists and artists
It felt like the sort of place where I should belong
So we troop in, and then there’s a rush when the band arrives
All the Slovenian photographers with their big-arsed lenses congregate down where I’m standing, taking photos
Because it took them a few minutes to work out they had got the wrong angle

And then watching the band, with my girlfriend, and getting bumped from behind
Once, twice, three times
I turn around: it’s a young, twenty-something Slovene with dreads
Designer dreads, with his designer threads, and his designer tears, in his designer jeans
And he’s giving me shit because I don’t look like I belong
So I put on my Mafia face, and I start swearing at him in Russian
Upon which, he backs off…
